Check Out CSM’s Veterans Lounge

The newly renovated Veterans Lounge at the College of Southern Maryland’s La Plata Campus will be on view at an open house 10:30 to 11:30 am Wednesday, Nov. 9. The Veterans Lounge in the Learning Resource Center (LR Building) in Room 103.

The lounge was originally dedicated a year ago when members of the college’s Veterans Organization found a space where students who are active-duty or have served in the military could get together and connect with other veterans, or just to study. Not long after the lounge opened, the college received a grant to renovate it from the Student Veterans of America and the Home Depot Foundation through the Vet Center Initiative. The grant, more than $9,000, gave the Veterans Lounge a facelift with new paint and ceiling tiles, as well as new furniture, a refrigerator, a microwave, file cabinets, a television, and bookshelves. There are computers along the wall for students to use.

CSM earned the 2016 Military Friendly School Designation from Victory Media for supporting student vets and their spouses who are transitioning from the military to the civilian workforce. The college is approved by the VA and the Maryland Higher Education Commission, so eligible veterans, military members and certain dependents of veterans can receive VA educational benefits for credit certificate and associate degree programs as well as some workforce development programs. CSM’s outreach includes a student veterans club, which is a chapter of Student Veterans Association, a non-profit coalition of more than 700 student veteran organizations on college campuses around the world.

The CSM veterans affair coordinator sees walk-in students from 9 to 11:30 am and 1 to 4 pm Tuesdays in Building A, Room 101F at the Prince Frederick Campus, 115 J.W. Williams Road; 9 to 11:30 am and 1 to 4 pm Wednesdays at the Lobby Express Counter in the Administration (AD) Building at the La Plata Campus, 8730 Mitchell Road; and 9 to 11:30 am and 1 to 4 pm Thursdays in Building B, Room 217 at the Leonardtown Campus 22950 Hollywood Road.
