VADM Sawyer to Lead 7th Fleet
VADM Phillip G. Sawyer, the new leader of the Navy’s troubled 7th Fleet, has arrived in Japan, replacing Joseph Aucoin, who was relieved last week after a second fatal collision involving one of his ships claimed the lives of 10 sailors.
7th Fleet Cmdr. Relieved: All Collisions During Basic Duties
Four collisions in the Seventh Fleet this year — all occurring during basic ship handling duties — resulted in the commander of the fleet being relieved. As the Navy begins an extensive review and reset, a multinational search for 10 missing sailors from the latest collision of the USS John McCain locates some remains, aboard ship.
