The Patuxent Partnership, the organization sponsor of Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics – Inspiring the Next Generation, is pleased to announce TPP Member Lockheed Martin as the first sponsor of this year’s program to introduce middle school girls to STEM professions.

The 2014 STEM-ING event will introduce middle school girls in the tri-county region to local STEM professionals; positive role models; and fun, hands-on workshops. Workshop materials, lunch, snacks throughout the day and all activities will be included for 140 student participants.

RADM Steve Tomaszeski, USN (ret), Vice President of the Navy-Marine Corps Program at Lockheed Martin says, “Lockheed Martin strongly supports educational events that encourage and develop future scientists and engineers. TPP’s sponsorship of STEM-ING is exactly the venue that may inspire students to rewarding STEM careers.  We need to start early, helping young students make the correlation between technologies we use every day and the St. Mary’s County scientists and engineers who make them possible.”

The one-day workshop is scheduled for May 3, 2014, at St. Mary’s College of Maryland and is open to sixth through eighth grade girls from Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties.

“We hope that by attending this innovative STEM-event, the next generation of female scientists, engineers, doctors, and STEM professionals will bridge the gender gap that exists in the workforce of today. We are proud that so many of our TPP Member organizations are aligned with our mission to support STEM events such as this one,” says Bonnie Green, Executive Director, TPP.

Last year the initiative operated as a chapter of the national Expanding Your Horizons Network. This year, the same core group will be hosting an identical STEM event, but operating as the independent, locally created group, STEM-ING. STEM-ING aims to expand beyond the currently targeted audience of female middle school students by including male middle school or female high school students in future initiatives.

SURVICE Engineering and TASC, Inc. are other TPP Members supporting STEM-ING. Last year’s sponsors included TPP Benefactor Raytheon, TPP Members Association of Naval Aviation (ANA), Coherent Technical Services, Inc. (CTSi), and National Contract Management Association (NCMA). Other local residents made tax-deductible, cash donations.

The company name and logo of all donors will be recognized on STEM-ING program materials, T-shirts, and social media for donations received no later than April 7. In-kind and monetary donations of any amount would be greatly appreciated. Donation suggestions include:

  • Sponsoring a workshop, $350
  • Sponsoring a specific event need such as t-shirt purchase or lunch
  • Sponsoring the volunteer appreciation event
  • In-kind donations of event materials

To make a tax-deductible contribution, please send a check made payable to The Patuxent Partnership and include “STEM-ING” in the memo field. Please mail check to 22335 Exploration Dr., Suite 1035, Lexington Park, MD 20653. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent provided by the law.
