volunteerThe community known as Southern Maryland is a hotbed of Activism, neighbors  taking care of their neighbors and strangers helping strangers for no other reason but to help someone who is in need.

No, this isn’t some government mandate, nor is it government funds that are paying to help. This movement rests on the backs of fellow citizens that are looking out for each other in these tumultuous times.

I have seen fellow citizens raise money for the local veterans home here in St Mary’s County with a Ride to the Wall. I have witnessed the outpouring of volunteerism for helping those who don’t have any money for dental care. In fact, there were just as many volunteers as patients at that event, and efforts to collect donations exceeded all goals.

The business community came together to help raise funds for a local veteran to have his parents’ home remodeled to improve his life after he sustained major injuries defending our freedom.

Our youth are also very active, doing everything from going to local retirement centers to play games and spend time with our seniors to taking a week out of their summer vacation to travel to Henryville, Indiana to help in the recovery efforts from a tornado that decimated the area.

These are just a few of examples of what is happening in our neighborhood, Southern Maryland. Thank you, neighbors, for your big hearts and, more importantly, your time to help your neighbor. It is with great pride that I say I live in Southern Maryland.
