Sandy Causes Three Sewer Overflows in Lexington Park
The St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission (MetCom) is reporting three wastewater overflows, which occurred on October 29, 2012, in the Lexington Park sewerage system. These overflows were caused by heavy rainfall as a result of Hurricane Sandy and are at the following locations:
- Interceptor Sewer Manhole at Old Missouri Street
- Interceptor Sewer through Naval Air Station Patuxent River (south side)
- Interceptor Sewer Manhole at Chestnut Way
The total volume of these overflows is unknown; however it is estimated to be greater than 50,000 gallons at each of the three locations.
Because of the high rate of dilution caused by storm water inflow into the sewerage system and surface water flooding in these vicinities, no adverse public health impact is anticipated. However, as a necessary precaution MetCom and County Health officials have decided to post signs in the vicinity of Old Missouri Street and Chestnut Way to warn the public against human or animal contact with standing water in these areas until November 6, 2012.
