Parties Work Together on Export-Import Action

The House of Representatives took important bipartisan action on behalf of American workers and businesses last week by finally opening the way for the full House to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank that is responsible for increasing foreign sales of American product.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP:

“For months, I have been urging Republican leaders to allow a vote to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank so that American businesses will be able to compete with global competitors on a level playing field and create jobs here at home. The majority of Members of the House support the Bank, and last week Democrats joined with 42 Republicans to sign a petition to force a vote to reopen it.

“I’m proud that Democrats and responsible Republican Members came together so that the House will finally have the opportunity to work its will on an issue that will strengthen our economy and expand opportunity.

“As the Republican party struggles with internal division, I will continue to urge the current leadership to put the interests of the American people before that of their most conservative members. The American people expect us to govern responsibly and address pressing legislative issues, such as paying our nation’s bills and reaching a budget agreement to replace the sequester. I hope that when the House returns to session following the October District Work Period that Republican leaders will work with Democrats to address these time-sensitive legislative priorities and avoid another manufactured crisis.”

“Last week, the Treasury Department notified Congress that extraordinary measures to prevent a default will be exhausted on November 5. With less than four weeks left to take action to ensure America can pay its bills, Republican leaders must work with Democrats to prevent the United States from being forced into an unnecessary default. Failure to take action will result in devastating economic impacts, including risking another financial crisis and threatening the jobs of hardworking Americans,” is the opening paragraph to Congressman Hoyer’s newsletter article ” Deadline to Ensure America Pays Its Bills Looms.” The article includes a recap of consequences from Republicans’ threatening to not pay America’s bills.
