In a cliff-hanging series of maneuvers that many Americans watched in their pajamas, the Congress lifted the partial shutdown of the federal government and President Obama has signed it, agreeing to fund federal agencies at current spending levels through Jan. 15 and voting to extend the nation’s borrowing authority through Feb. 7. The legislation doesn’t include a provision granting federal agencies more flexibility to mitigate the effects of the across-the-board reductions known as the sequester, The Wall Street Journal reports.
This latest fiscal legislation instructs Congressional leaders to name negotiators to a group, led by Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., that will craft a larger budget deal due in December, CBS News reports.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 205 points on news of the Congressional deal.
