MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital Supports the Arts

A hallway on the first floor of MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital has been looking less like a hospital and more like an art gallery the past few months as the hospital shows its support for the arts.

MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital has joined other members of the Leonardtown Business Association in efforts to celebrate the arts. MSMH is hosting a rotating exhibit of paintings by local artists in the hallway outside the newly renovated sleep laboratory. The second series of artwork was installed in November.

“For many years, the works of local artists have brightened the walls of our hospital,” said Christine Wray, president of MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. “As a community hospital, we strive to reflect the culture of the individuals we serve and there is no better way to do that than through artwork created by the people who live here.”

In July 2013, Leonardtown, MD, earned the distinction of being Maryland’s 22nd Arts and Entertainment District, the first and only one in Southern Maryland. Maryland was one of the first states in the country to create a statewide tax benefit jurisdiction for arts and entertainment.

Leonardtown’s district is limited to 100 acres that include most of the downtown area. Still, even businesses outside of that area also showcase artwork.

“Displaying artwork at local businesses is a wonderful way to connect artists with people who may never visit a local gallery,” said Holly Meyer, director of MedStar St. Mary’s Marketing, Public Relations and Philanthropy Department. “There is so much talent here in our county; everyone should be given as many opportunities as possible to enjoy it.”

The exhibit is coordinated through the St. Mary’s County Arts Council and features nine artists. All of the artwork on display is available for purchase through the individual artists.
