Make It In America: Tech Transfer

Make it In America
Posted for Congressman Steny Hoyer

“Five years after Make It In America first launched, our economy has significantly changed,” according to the Office of the Democratic Whip’s website, “and we are facing a different economic landscape.”

Since Congressman Steny Hoyer made that announcement he and his colleagues continue to explore the challenges and opportunities for job creation and economic growth facing American businesses. Mr. Hoyer has queried his district’s business leaders and company owners on what they need to succeed. The Make It in America initiatives are developed from what is learned from working businesses.

“The economy has changed significantly since 2010, which is why I’m hearing from economic experts, business and labor leaders, and local businesses on the challenges and opportunities they face today, and how the Make It In America plan should be updated to reflect today’s environment,” Rep. Hoyer said.

Following a series of Congressional hearings this summer to help Congress determine how best to support the nation’s businesses, workers, innovators, and entrepreneurs, Rep. Hoyer launched and continues a tour of  Maryland businesses. He is asking what they need and listening to what Make It In America initiatives to fit the needs of companies in his Maryland District 5 and across the nation.

In Lexington Park, MD, home of the Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Rep. Hoyer spent a morning in the manufacturing facility of J.F. Taylor, Inc., a homegrown success story.

In this video, Wayne Taylor, president of J. F. Taylor, Inc., speaks with Rep. Hoyer about efforts to expand the successful defense contracting firm into commercial endeavors. Mr. Taylor introduces the 30-year old company founded by his father three decades ago, about the time Congressman Hoyer entered office.

The firm is still family-owned and employs 300 people today. Mr. Taylor describes the $100 million company as a “big, small company” and provides a quick overview of the company’s success and growth during those decades. Following the visit, Rep. Hoyer noted the “important work they are doing in St. Mary’s County providing a range of quality products and services to their customers, including the U.S. Department of Defense.”
