Lecture Topic: A Forgotten Patriot

Patriot

David Brown, a retired adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University, will give a talk at the Historically Speaking event, “George Plater: St. Mary’s Forgotten Patriot,” on March 26.

The talk will be presented from 7:30 to 9pm at the Daugherty-Palmer Commons at St. Mary’s College of Maryland in St. Mary’s City.

With more than 33 years as a foreign service officer, Mr. Brown unfolds the story of George Plater, a largely unknown patriot. Plater was born and raised at Sotterley Plantation and is counted among the earliest of Maryland’s supporters of Independence. He represented Maryland in the Continental Congress from 1778 to 1780 and briefly served as the sixth governor of Maryland in 1791 and 1792.

In this 250th year of American Independence, encounter the story of a modest and, for our times, flawed man whose history deserves telling.

Reservations for the event may be made here.

Historically Speaking is a project by the St. Mary’s County Historical Society and the Center for the Study of Democracy at St. Mary’s College.

The St. Mary’s County Historical Society is the repository of a unique collection of Maryland memorabilia and museum pieces displayed on the first floor of Tudor Hall and in the Old Jail Museum at 41625 Courthouse Drive in Leonardtown. The 18th-century Tudor Hall also serves as headquarters of the society and houses the Historical Society’s Research Center.
