Greenwell State Park may be in a position to expand and better capitalize on a multi-billion dollar industry in Maryland, while maintaining its rural charm and preserving wildlife. By joining the proposed Maryland Horse Park System, Greenwell would be able to serve as an educational and culture venue within the park system.

As outlined in a Request for Interest sent out earlier this year, the Maryland Horse Industry Board is seeking to “identify sites to serve as the larger event/educational venues to augment a variety of smaller riding/educational centers that will be part of [a larger network of horse parks]” in the state. The proposed park system’s goal is to “develop Maryland’s equine infrastructure to maximize awareness, growth and economic value of the State’s horse industry.”

According to a nomination of the Greenwell facilities by the Greenwell Foundation, “Greenwell meets and exceeds the qualifications sought by the State to distinguish sites within the proposed System.” As a pre-established equestrian facility, the park has many of the necessary amenities required, as well as the potential for expansion.

The Foundation currently offers year-round education and recreational services to the general public, including offering therapeutic riding programs for children and adults. Additionally, as a “current member of the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH), the Greenwell Foundation is currently well on its way to securing PATH certification.”

As is, the park attracts approximately 40,000 visitors and can accommodate increased visitation. Foundation leadership is looking forward to working with the MHIB “to develop co-branding and marketing opportunities to provide a uniform image to prospective visitors.”
