More than 800,000 cars and trucks were recalled last month.

Keeping track of recalls can be aided by a visit to the Insurance Journal which reports the addition of Hyundai Motor Co. and Subaru to the growing list of companies facing federally identified vehicle safety problems.

Hyundai recalled more than 205,000 Veracruz and Sante Fe crossovers for model years 2007 and 2008, according to the journal. The identified defect could compromise side airbag deployment.

Three recalls plagued Subaru. The widest ranging one involves nearly 300,000 Subarus from 2002 to 2007 and is particularly relevant in Southern Maryland. The recall concerns possible breakage in the suspension if exposed to salty or humid climates.

Overheating windshield wiper motors forced the recall of nearly 200,000 more Subarus – the  Outback and Legacy 2010 and 2011 models. A separate recall on those 2011 models impacts 70,000 cars with moon roofs where the glass could become unattached.

Hyundai affiliate Kia was also impacted. More than 10,000 of Kia’s 2007-2008 Sorento could fail to deploy the  front passenger airbag.

And more than 30,000 new Volkswagen Jetta sedans – 2011-2012 models – were recalled for an exhaust pipe so long it could burn a person’s leg.

The latest round of recalls follows on the heels of the  National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launch of a preliminary investigation into Ford Motor’s  minivans from 2004 to 2005.
