Boh’s Efforts Pay Off: DoD Objects to Turbines

Posted for Del. John Bohanan

Dear Neighbor,

This week, we received exciting news about my efforts to protect the national security mission at Pax River from the proposed Great Bay Wind energy project on the Eastern Shore.  The Department of Defense in a letter to the U.S. Department of Transportation formally objected to the project saying that the project “would significantly impair or degrade the capability of the Department of Defense to conduct research, development, testing and evaluation, and operations or to maintain military readiness.”

[The full letter is at the end of this post.]

As many of you know, I have been busy working to ensure that this project did not interfere with Pax’s mission since the end of 2013.  During the 2014 legislative session of the Maryland General Assembly, I authored and the General Assembly overwhelmingly passed legislation that would have put off consideration of the Great Bay Wind project until a $2 million Massachusetts Institute of Technology study was completed in 2015.  Although this legislation passed overwhelmingly, Governor O’Malley in a misguided decision vetoed this legislation.  While I was disappointed by this veto, I have remained vigilant that we must protect Pax’s mission and the DoD objection to the project goes a long way toward achieving that goal.  While we are uncertain what next steps the developer of this project will take, I believe that there is not a way forward for them to construct this project in a way that would interfere with Pax’s operations.

Throughout this time, I have worked closely with the County, state and federal officials on this issue.  I will continue to be a strong supporter of Pax.

Sincerely,

John Bohanan
