quarter auctionYoung Life of St. Mary’s will hold an auction and social event at Flat Iron Farm to help fund a new permanent area director, Saturday, May 3, 2014, at 6 pm.

Young Life of St. Mary’s gratefully celebrates 15 years of service to local teens and middle school students. Young Life credits area supporters and volunteers with its success. In fact, a growing number of adults, many of whom came of age in the faith-based youth mentoring program themselves, are stepping up to serve today’s kids as teachers, coaches, ministers, businessmen and friends.

Items up for auction include a VIP Caps ticket package, a fishing trip, horseback riding lessons and more. The evening will begin at 6 pm with a silent auction, music by local favorite, Joseph Norris, and heavy hors d’oeuvres by AnnaBelle Sanders’ Oasis of Flavor Catering. Richard Menard, with Homestead Auctions, will start the live auction at 7 pm. Tickets are $25.

“We are excited about plans to bring a new full time staff person on board and are working hard to make that happen soon,” says committee member Jeff Errington.

The new Young Life area director will recruit, train and lead young adult volunteers in building relationships with young people by going where kids are and spending time with them in order to win the right to speak wisdom into their lives. The program centers on summer camp experiences and on the iconic “Club” meeting, a weekly gathering where teens, adult volunteers, and Young Life staff participate in lively music, hilarious games, and a short, relevant Bible teaching.

“It is amazing and gratifying to see the long lasting impact that their efforts have had through the years. There are some really great young people out there who want to make a difference in kids’ lives,” says Johnny Cheseldine, Young Life Committee Co-Chairman for 2014, “and that is what St. Mary’s Young Life is all about.”

Although this “street level” ministry is a relative newcomer by Southern Maryland standards, members of the 2014 Young Life Adult Support Committee boast collectively nearly two centuries of personal investment and service in St. Mary’s County, representing a broad cross section of the local population, from entrepreneurs and educators to Pax River military and base professionals.
