The Virginia National Guard confirmed that it has launched an investigation into two soldiers who have espoused anti-government views while running a county militia in the state. Military.com reports Staff Sgts. Daniel Abbott and Alexandra Griffeth are running the Campbell County Militia, which operates in the countryside around Lynchburg, VA, with the blessing of Campbell County’s Board of Supervisors.

The unemployment rate for female veterans rose to 7% in August while the rate for all veterans bumped up to 3.5%, compared with a tick down from 4.3% to 4.2% for the overall population. The GOP members of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, in a 12-7 party-line vote, will subpoena the VA for information about the third-party organizations establishing voter registration services at the VA in Michigan. Chair Mike Bost (R-IL) says a 3-year-old executive order to promote voter access prompted the VA to set up the services, reports Stars and Stripes.

A third Navy amphibious warship, the USS Iwo Jima, suffered a major mechanical failure this week forcing a return to port. In March, USS Wasp, the same class of ship as the Iwo Jima and in the same waters off of Virginia, also abruptly returned to port. The USS Boxer finally deployed in mid-July, delaying arrival of Marines, aircraft, and vehicles by months. Military.com says the delays and breakdowns are set to reignite friction between the services regarding the Navy’s reliability to transport Marines to sea.
Yemen’s Houthi rebels claim they shot down another American-made multimillion dollar surveillance MQ-9 drone flying over the country, reports Military Times. The US launched airstrikes over Houthi-controlled territory afterward, the rebels said. The US military told The Associated Press it was aware of the claim but has “received no reports” of American military drones being downed over Yemen.
Jam-resistant GPS elusive as M-code delays pile up, reports Breaking Defense. To make matters worse, the Defense Department is now facing down a possible shortage of microchips and processor cards to allow ground vehicles, ships, and aircraft to access GPS at all, according to a new report by the Government Accountability Office.

China’s Defense Ministry announced joint naval and air drills with Russia will start this month, underscoring the closeness between their militaries as Russia presses its grinding invasion of Ukraine, says AP News. The ministry said the Northern United-2024 exercises would take place in the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk farther north but gave no details.
A recent Gallup poll shows only 47% of Americans are “very satisfied” with the way their life is going, the personal-finance website WalletHub ranked Maryland #2 in its report on the Happiest States in America in 2024. WalletHub compared the 50 states across 30 key indicators of happiness, from the depression rate and the share of adults feeling productive to income growth and the unemployment rate. Wallet Hub also released the States that Vaccinate the Most in 2024, which ranks Maryland 5th., DC 9th, and Virginia 18th. According to the WHO, vaccines prevent 4 to 5 million deaths per year worldwide.

Working capital funds (Transportation) in the amount of $17,155,000 is obligated for fiscal 2024 and will expire at the end of the fiscal year. Leidos Inc., Reston, Virginia, was awarded a $13,102,146 cost-reimbursement contract for a Genesis Chamber: design, evaluation, and construction high powered microwave prototype. This contract will cover the breadth of ongoing system development for the purpose of providing a transition pathway from technology demonstrator systems to military-specification equipment. Work will be performed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and is expected to be completed by December 2027. This contract was the result of a competitive acquisition, and one offer was received. Fiscal 2024 research, development, test and evaluation funds in the amount of $600,000 are being obligated at the time of award.
