Veterans Day Parade Set in Leonardtown

Parade

Congressman Steny Hoyer and Gov. Larry Hogan have been invited to participate in Leonardtown’s annual Veterans Day Parade at 10 am Nov. 11. The parade is sponsored by the St. Mary’s County commissioners and the Leonardtown commissioners.

Veterans, dignitaries, elected officials, military units, high school marching bands, color guards, classic and antique cars, horses, cheerleaders, and so many more will start off on Fenwick Street. Immediately after the parade, stay in the Town Square for a Veterans Memorial Ceremony. There will be patriotic music, a wreath-laying, and words of remembrance.

Come early to talk to representatives from Vacations for Vets of St. Mary’s, Disabled American Veterans, The Marine Corps League and Young Marines, the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum, CSM’s Heroes Campaign, and the Navy Gold Star Program. These organizations will be set up in the Town Square so they can provide information on programs for veterans and active-duty military, including ways the general public can help our local military families.

If there is inclement weather, the parade will be canceled and the memorial ceremony will be held in the auditorium at St. Mary’s Ryken High School at 22600 Camp Calvert Road in Leonardtown (inside Romuald Hall on the back campus). Those wishing to lay wreaths at the monuments may choose to do so.

Parking

Spectators and parade participants are asked to not park in the courthouse parking lot on Courthouse Drive or surrounding side streets. These areas are reserved exclusively for school buses and shuttles and must remain clear to reduce congestion at the end of the parade.

Spectators are also asked not to park at the College of Southern Maryland Leonardtown Campus as the college will be open for classes on Veterans Day. Parking spaces there are needed for students and faculty.

Parking is encouraged at the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds and free shuttles will be provided. Free parking and shuttles also available at the St. Mary’s County Governmental Center. Park in the areas near the Carter State Office Building at 23115 Leonard Hall Drive. Wheelchair-accessible shuttles will be available. The return shuttle stop for both locations is located across from The Olde Town Pub on the corner of Washington and Shadrick streets.

Streets Closed

Washington Street and Fenwick Street leading into downtown Leonardtown will be closed to traffic from 8 am to noon. Downtown parking and thru traffic will be limited to areas accessible from Lawrence Avenue. Officers from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office will provide traffic control, and parade volunteers will assist with parking and street detours.
