Summer Camp or Summer Adventure?

Can’t Find the Right Summer Camp? Try a Fins + Claws Student Charter with Cap’n Jack Russell

Squirming, slimy, and wet hands-on lessons of practical safety and best ecological practices around the shoreline are again available on student charters. And slightly less messy charters can be arranged for adults as well.

Reservations open this week for the summer 2016 Fins + Claws adventures, launched from SeaFruit Oyster House on St. George Island in the Maryland waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

Up to four “crew” positions are open to students of all ages. Crew members younger than 10 require an accompanying adult parent or guardian. No student is too old to learn something new.

Activities could include wading in the creek, looking for turtle nests, fishing and crabbing from a 32-foot licensed charter boat, and learning to identify and clean a soft crab.

“I just call it Rivers 101,” says Cap’n Russell.

Cap’n Jack Russell and First Mate John Fulchiron lead these expeditions. They are both fingerprinted and drug-tested environmental education instructors in the state of Maryland; and each with 30 years of instructional, waterfront, and vessel experience.

Student charters run from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm and should be scheduled as far in advance as possible. Cost is $100 per person per day. A minimum of two crew members are required for a charter to run. Bring a friend, bring a parent, bring Grandpa and Grandma for a day on the bay. They will enjoy it as much as the students.

“Come on down to St. George Island,” Cap’n Jack Russell welcomes prospective crew members, “and learn some stuff to amaze your parents and friends.”

SeaFruit Oyster House is at nearly the very end of 16129 Piney Point Road on St. George Island off Piney Point, MD, 20674, the former Chesapeake Bay Field Lab, former home of the skipjack, the Dee of St. Mary’s.

Crew are asked to bring a lunch. Refrigeration is available for lunches and drinks students wish to bring. Water is available to the students throughout the day.

Dress to get wet. A change of clothing is a good idea. A second pair of shoes is a really good idea. Don’t forget a hat with a brim to keep the sun and any light rain at bay. There are flushable facilities on-site and the oyster house provides sufficient and comfortable indoor space for inclement weather. Life vests are available for all crew, but many crew members prefer to bring their own personal flotation device. All crew members will wear pfds when aboard a vessel.

Call 240-434-1385 or email Jack Russell for more information and reservations. And consider a family cruise, catch the crabs for your dinner on a Fins + Claws trotlining charter.
