Students Compete With Unmanned Aircraft

Unmanned Vehicle Competition Planned

Students who love unmanned aircraft will compete in the annual Student Unmanned Aerial System Competition June 15 to 19, 2016, sponsored by the Seafarer chapter of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems and supported by The Patuxent Partnership.

The event will be held at the US Navy’s Webster Field, which is the site of the Unmanned Aerial System Test and Evaluation Directorate, in St. Mary’s County.

The competition aims to stimulate and foster interest in unmanned systems, technologies and careers. It will challenge undergraduate students by requiring them to design, fabricate, and demonstration an autonomous unmanned aircraft that is able to complete a wide range of specific tasks.

Teams of students will be judged on their design and the performance of their aircraft.

Last year, in the 2015 competition, 46 teams competed for more than $50,000 in prize money. The teams came from 25 different colleges in the US, as well as 16 colleges in other countries, and five high schools.

This event brings out the best future engineers, scientists, and leaders. Firms will have the opportunity to recruit before the competition begins. After the competition, students and their peers will be treated to an awards banquet.

Industry and government organizations that are interested in being a part of the event can contact AUVSI Seafarer Chapter organizers. There will be both sponsorship and partnership opportunities available. For more information, visit here.

Sponsorship levels start at $1,000 and go up from there, all the way to $10,000. The different levels include things like logos on the T-shirts and SUAS website, tickets to the awards banquet, a table at the field, and much more.
