So You Want a Degree in Cybersecurity

Higher Education

Southern Maryland Higher Education Center offers cybersecurity courses close to home at its California, Maryland, campus for those seeking degrees in the cybersecurity field.

The winter semester begins Monday, Jan. 9, 2017.

University of Maryland University College courses include:

CMIT 202 6010 (25313) Fundamentals of Computer Troubleshooting, prerequisite for the course is IFSM  201, (given in the fall or online), Mondays 6 to 9 pm.

CMIT 321 6015 (25004) Ethical Hacking, prerequisite is CMIT 320, Tuesdays 6 to 9 pm, (given in the fall or online).

The Ethical Hacking course is a study of the fundamental concepts of system vulnerability assessment and penetration testing. By the completion of the course, students will be able to discover vulnerabilities, recommend solutions for hardening network security, and protect assets from attackers in order to create an overall organizational security posture. You will participate in hands-on lab projects and prepare a penetration testing report in this course. The primary aim is to prepare you to sit for the EC Council Certified Ethical Hackers certification exam. Concepts learned in this course will be directly applicable to the network security field.

This is a class in computer security, and will cover common system vulnerabilities, exploits, and countermeasures. This course is intended to show students how to recognize and prevent malicious activity. Many of the security tools to be discuss can be misused by hackers. It is important that students use these tools in an ethical and responsible manner at all times.

Using some of these tools without prior authorization could be against some company policies or illegal in some places. If you want to install or use these tools on a system other than your own personal computer must get permission in writing from the owner of the system before installation.

CMIT 265 6050 (25317) Fundamentals of Networking will be offered March 13 through May 7, prerequisite is IFSM 201, (given in the fall or online), Mondays 6 to 9 pm.

A winter course in the UMUC program — CSIA 310 Cybersecurity Processes and Technologies — will be offered from 5:30 to 9:30 pm Thursdays.  A second course in the program begins in March. CSIA 350 Cybersecurity in Business and Industry will be offered 6 to 9 pm Wednesdays.
