Slow Moving Sandy to Make Landfall This Afternoon

rainThe full wrath of Hurricane Sandy is predicted to impact St. Mary’s County beginning late this afternoon. Heavy rains with high winds are expected between 8 p.m. this evening and 3 a.m. Tuesday morning.

St. Mary’s County is currently under a flood warning through 4 p.m.

Governor O’Malley has requested all residents to stay off the roads until the storm has passed. However, all state highways and local roads remain open. Bridge closures may be announced as the storm progresses through the area.

Both county evacuation shelters remain open and fully staffed at Great Mills High School and Leonardtown High School. Any citizens planning on relocating to a shelter should bring any toiletries and medications in quantities to last for several days. Pets are allowed at both shelters; however Animal Control staff will relocate them to the county fairgrounds where they will be cared for until the storm subsides.

Other storm notes:

County Government offices will be closed for all non-essential County Employees on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012 and the weekly Board of County Commissioners meeting has been rescheduled until Friday, Nov. 2 at 9 a.m.

The STS Transit system, six Convenience Centers and St. Andrews Landfill operations will be suspended for Tuesday, October 30, 2012.

All St. Mary’s County Public Schools and offices will be closed on Tuesday for students and staff and there will be no Non-Public School Bus transportation service on Tuesday, Oct. 30.

The Household Hazardous Waste collection event, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3, has been cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date.

Gates 1 and 3 at NAS Patuxent River are closed. The installation and tenant organizations are in a Mission Essential Personnel (MEP) only status through Tuesday, Oct. 30. Further updates will provide the duration of the MEP-only condition. Individuals who are unaware of their own status as a MEP employee should contact their supervisor. Additionally, as of noon today, the following are closed: Naval Health Clinic (NHC) and Pharmacy, Child Development Center (CDC), School Aged Care (SAC) program, the NEX (Navy Exchange), Commissary, Gas Station/Mini-mart and Drill Hall.
