Second Performance in Recital Series Set

Recital

The second performance in the newly created Benny C. Morgan Recital Series is set for 8 pm Nov. 19 at the College of Southern Maryland Leonardtown Campus, and faculty member Hannah Baslee is set to perform.

Ms. Baslee is in her second year as an adjunct professor at CSM. She has taught both classroom and online sections of music appreciation and will teach music fundamentals next semester. In addition to teaching at CSM, she works as a voice and piano teacher at Cardon Studios in Washington, DC.

“Choral singing was my first love, and I keep it in my life by participating in the D.C.-based group The 18th Street Singers. I also sing with a professional early music chamber choir at The Church of the Ascension and Saint Agnes in the District,” she said.

Ms. Baslee will collaborate with Dr. Stephen Johnson, chair of the CSM communication, arts and humanities division, in a program of some of her all-time favorite pieces. “A few honorable mentions include two arias from Bach’s ‘Mass in B-minor,’ Ravel’s musical setting of the influential Cervantes story ‘Don Quixote,’ as well as pieces from my favorite musical, ‘Chicago,’” she said.

This recital performance will be her first at CSM. She also is set to perform at 3 p.m. April 9 as part of the Ward Virts Concert Series on the CSM Prince Frederick Campus.

The Benny C. Morgan Recital Series was named in honor of a beloved teacher and musician in Southern Maryland, who died in February 2016. Before his death, Morgan donated his prized Steinway piano to the CSM Music Department. In appreciation for the gift, the recital series was created in his honor at the Leonardtown Campus.

The concert series schedule includes the Southern Maryland Chamber Ensemble at 8 pm March 4, and Southern Maryland Chamber Players at 8 pm April 15.

In this inaugural 2016-17 season of the Morgan recital series, the artists will volunteer their time and talent, so admission is free. All performances are in the auditorium of Building A on the Leonardtown Campus, 22950 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown.
