Lower Lexington Park, Maryland, carries a gravel-rich legacy, which in the spirit of lemonade out of lemons inspired a clutch of families more than 60 years ago to create the Sanner’s Lake Sportsmen’s Club.

A couple blocks off Great Mills Road, mining at the site created a lake and natural shooting ranges for the not-for-profit club to foster outdoor sports, environmental and wildlife conservation, hunting, and gun safety.

“This is where I learned to swim,” said Delegate John Bohanan, who represents the southern half of St. Mary’s County including much of Lexington Park. “And hunting and fishing.”

The Sanner’s Lake Sportsmen’s Club was founded in 1951 by a group of sportsmen. The goal of the club is to provide a safe place for individuals to practice the safe handling of pistols, rifles, and shotguns, as well as provide a family-oriented environment for other activities such as swimming and fishing.

Del. Bohanan was on hand this week as the club thanked officials and showed off renovations that have brought the facilities up to date with 21st-century shooting ranges. The Sanner’s Lake club offers a variety of programs open to the public and also welcomes the public to its rifle, pistol, and shotgun matches. Programs  include Women on Target, an instructional shooting clinic;  22Rimfire and Skeet Shooting program in conjunction with the Paralympic Sport-Southern Maryland; and a variety of youth and Scout-oriented programming.
