The Patuxent River Naval Air Museum launches a new series at the Pax Museum, Meet the Authors! July 20, 2014, 1 – 5 pm.

The series provides an opportunity to hear exciting and fascinating stories about the region, about Naval aviation, even a true-life spy tale.

The mix of participating authors includes:

  • Erik Hildebrandt and his world famous aviation photography books.
With the release of FRONT ROW CENTER 3, his sixth book, Erik Hildebrandt is firmly established as one of the most resourceful and innovative creators of world-class aviation imagery.
  • Julia Maki with her children’s books.
“When we arrive at my school, Mom kisses me good-bye as she drops me off. I go into my school, and she goes to work on a Navy base. When she gets there, she will fly in a huge, gray airplane called a P-3C Orion. They are as big as a dinosaur!” This story, “My Mom Hunts Submarines,” is a story written for young children about a young girl who has a mother in the military.  Everything about their day is normal- except when the mother goes off to work, she will fly in planes and hunt for submarines.  Sometimes she has to travel and is away for a while, but she will always come home.Throughout the entire book, the resounding theme is, “If my mom can fly in planes and hunt submarines, there isn’t anything I cannot do!”  This is an important message that every child needs to hear.
  • Hank Caruso and his world famous Aerocatures, The Most Distinctive Images in Aviation Art, are among the most novel and distinctive images in aviation art today. Trained as both an artist and engineer, Hank Caruso’s familiarity with aviation technology and aircraft operations enable him to convincingly show how flight crews feel about their aircraft and how the aircraft feel about themselves. His careful draftsmanship and attention to detail add a strong sense of realism to his dynamic portrayals of each aircraft’s unique personality. The credibility of Hank’s aviation art is enhanced by his first-hand flying experiences as a backseater with Navy and Air Force tactical, test, and training organizations, including the Blue Angels, Top Gun, and the US Naval Test Pilot School.

  • Dr. Herb Gilliland a Naval Academy Professor presenting his Award Winning Voyage to a Thousand Cares, Admiral Dan Gallery: The Life and Wit of a Navy Original, and his most recent book USS Constellation on the Dismal Coast.
    C. Herbert Gilliland grew up mostly in Florida and graduated from the University of Florida. He now teaches at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and is a retired naval reserve captain. Although his Ph.D. is in English Literature, his interests in recent years have turned to matters connected with naval history.

All authors have books to sell and will be happy to autograph them for you. They will be on-site and eager to discuss their books and careers.

Not only will you enjoy meeting your new literary best friends, but you’ll also be able to relax and share a glass of wine or bottle of beer. Refreshments will be available for purchase as a fundraiser for the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum.

Keep an eye out for updated information about this not-to-miss event.
