A drug summit for parents focusing on heroin and prescription medicine abuse drew more than 300 people to the Hollywood Volunteer Firehouse in the opening days of March. In St. Mary’s County, as elsewhere across America, an epidemic of heroin and prescription drug abuse is wreaking death and debilitating dependence.

“Everyone knows someone,” says the flyer. And beneath there is a photo of a mother and daughter with the words, “We need to talk.”

Among the local sobering facts are these: Heroin is cheaper and easier to obtain than prescription medication and overdose deaths are increasing at an alarming rate. St. Mary’s Hospital admissions for treatment of prescription opioid use increased 400 percent from 2008 to 2012 and heroin admissions increased 230 percent. Nearly 70 percent of people 12 and older who abuse prescription drugs get them from a friend or relative.
