Meeting in Freedom

By Juneteenth (June 16) 2012, Lexington Park will boast a monument to the United States Colored Troops of the Civil War.

Elected officials joined a predominantly African American crowd of at least 100 who stood in a cold sharp wind to hear speeches commemorating St. Mary’s County United States Colored Troops who fought for freedom during the Civil War, including three Medal of Honor recipients from St. Mary’s County.

The monument will stand at John G. Lancaster Park, named after the first African American elected to the St. Mary’s County board of commissioners in 1986.
