LSM Class Gets Look at Defense Industry

Defense Industry

Members of the Leadership Southern Maryland Class of 2016 enjoyed the second of nine education programs for their class by learning about the defense industry in November.

The class started the day at Smartonix Inc. in Hollywood, where the LSM class learned how contractors support the Maryland National Guard and Military Reserves. Smartronix executives briefed the class on the capabilities of the organization and gave a tour of the facility.

The next part of the day was spent at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, where retired Navy Capt. Matt Scassero, who is now the University of Maryland UAS test site director, was the tour host for the day. LSM participants were welcomed by Navy Capt. Heidi Fleming, the commanding officer of Pax River NAS, then given a walking tour of the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School by John O’Connor, chief of academics for the school. Lunch time doubled as a chance for LSM to meet with members of the Engineering and Scientist Development Program.

In the afternoon, the students learned about the Broad Area Maritime Surveillance-Demonstrator (BAMS-D) Hangar, discussed by Dave Seagle, and the X-47 Hangar, discussed by Barbara Weathers. Then LSM alum 2011 and retired Navy captain, Dave Gleisner, took participants on a windshield tour to these two locations by answering questions and providing information on unmanned air vehicles. From there, the participants went to the Atlantic Test Range, where another LSM alum 2010, Rob Vargo, spoke about the capabilities of the Atlantic Test Range. The last event of the day was a brief on the future of naval aviation by Rear Adm. C. J. Jaynes, program executive officer for Air Anti-Submarine Warfare, Assault and Special Mission Programs (PEO(A)).
