Landscape of SoMd Addictions is Shifting

Posted for Walden Behavioral Health

In the video below St. Mary’s County Sheriff Tim Cameron and Dr. O’Brien give some local statistics on the size of the problem in St. Mary’s County, MD.

The War on Drugs did reduce the supply of illegal drugs. But prescription drugs, in particular opiates, are the most misused of drugs today. The misuse is so widespread and pervasive both law enforcement and health officials consider it an epidemic.

While illicit use of prescription drugs is one aspect of the opiate epidemic, there is the properly prescribed use of opiates causing addiction as well. The new dealers, say health and law officials, are neighbors, teachers, students, doctors, and many of these unwittingly by keeping these drugs in their medicine cabinets. To get rid of opiates the sheriff’s office at 23150 Leonard Hall Drive, Leonardtown, MD 20650 (301) 475-8008 has a drop box for your unused medicines. It is accessible to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
