 Beach Combers Exhibit Opening

This exhibit is concerned with the discoveries that artists make at the seaside. Some of the questions that are addressed are: How do the sounds, tides, colors, and textures inspire artistic expression? How does the sea affect the content, mood, and execution of works of art? How do artists incorporate these experiences and even the objects they find at the beach, into their art?

The goal of this exhibit is to create a rich and textured exploration of our relationship with the seaside. Come see works of art inspired by life near the sea; many works will incorporate elements discovered on the beach.

The exhibit is open from June 20 through August 31, 2014. For more information please call (410) 326-4640 or visit www.annmariegarden.org.

Summer Exhibit: Sailor Made: Return of the Woolies

A spectacular collection of sailor’s folk art, called “woolies” is currently on display in the mezzanine gallery at Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center through January 25, 2015. The exhibit, titled Sailor Made: Return of the Woolies, consists of more than fifty framed woolies on loan from Donald Berezoski, a resident of Naples, Florida, and long-time woolie collector.

Like scrimshaws, woolies were created by sailors, mostly British, during their long months at sea and appear to have been gifts for family members. The height of woolie production was from 1840 to the 1880s, with the advent of photography leading to their decline in popularity. Typically, a woolie portrays the sailor’s ship, or another ship they encountered during their travels.

For those who are interested in learning more about this charming folk art, a free Gallery Talk & Tour led by Mr. Berezoski, will be held on Sunday, August 3, 2pm-4pm. The Gallery Talk & Tour is free; reservations are not required to attend. Admission to the exhibit is included with the price of site admission. For additional information please visit www.annmariegarden.org or call (410) 326-4640.
