Jobs Recovery Continuing

Hoyer Earns High Score From LCV

The Bureau of Labor Statistics report, released Oct. 7, 2016, demonstrates a continuing jobs recovery at a solid pace. The report on the progress through Septembern2016 show six years of continual job growth. More than 167,000 new private sector jobs have been added and more Americans are entering the workforce. There are also gains in wages.

However, according to House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD), in a statement released after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for September 2016, “We are making real progress – but our work is far from done. Congress must work together to provide greater economic certainty and to make key investments in growth so that all Americans can experience the benefits of our economic recovery.

“Ultimately, the measure of our economic strength isn’t how many new jobs we create but whether a job in America leads to opportunities to secure the dream that has always been America’s promise.”

September’s jobless rate was 5.0 percent; it was at 4.9 percent June through August 2016. In September, employment gains occurred in professional and business services and in health care.

Employment in food services and drinking places continued to trend up in September (+30,000) and has increased by 300,000 over the year.

Retail trade employment continued to trend up over the month (+22,000). Within the industry, job gains occurred in clothing and clothing accessories stores (+14,000) and in gasoline stations (+8,000). Over the year, employment in retail trade has risen by 317,000.

Mining employment was unchanged in September after declining by 220,000 from a peak in September 2014.

Employment in other major industries, including construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, transportation and warehousing, information, financial activities, and government, changed little over the month.

“Democrats will continue to push for those policies that provide greater economic certainty and for key investments in growth so that all Americans can experience the benefits of our economic recovery. And we will continue to work toward the adoption of legislation under our Make It In America plan to expand entrepreneurship and innovation.”
