Jobless Rate Falls to Lowest Level in 9 Years

Hoyer Earns High Score From LCV

Hoyer Issues Statement on November Jobs Report

The US economy continued to see strong job gains in November 2016, and the unemployment rate fell to its lowest level in nearly a decade, according to the US Department of Labor’s latest jobs report.

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement:

“With our economy adding another 156,000 private sector jobs in November, we are continuing to see strong job gains, in large part due to the efforts of Democrats and President Obama in the aftermath of the Great Recession. It says much about the president’s legacy and the hard work we have achieved together that the unemployment rate has now fallen to 4.6 percent, its lowest level in over nine years. Democrats will continue working to ensure that the jobs we create translate into economic advancement and economic security for America’s workers. That’s what our Make It In America plan is all about, and it aims to achieve those goals by expanding innovation and entrepreneurship, closing the skills gap, building a twenty-first century infrastructure, and breaking down barriers to manufacturing in the United States,” the congressman said.

As a result of the policies put in place by President Obama and Democrats, the incoming administration will inherit a strong and growing economy, Rep. Hoyer said.

“House Democrats will continue to stand up for working Americans and their families,” he said.

Employment in professional and business services rose by 63,000 in November and has risen by 571,000 over the year. Over the month, accounting and bookkeeping services added 18,000 jobs. Employment continued to trend up in administrative and support services, computer systems design and related services, and management and technical consulting services.

Health care employment rose by 28,000 jobs in November. Within the industry, employment growth occurred in ambulatory health care services. Over the past 12 months, health care has added 407,000 jobs.

Employment in construction continued on its recent upward trend in November, with a gain in residential specialty trade contractors. Over the past 3 months, construction has added 59,000 jobs, largely in residential construction.
