Steny_Hoyer cropHouse Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after Interior Secretary Sally Jewell announced $162 million in funding for projects to protect Atlantic Coast communities from future storms like Hurricane Sandy:

“Today’s announcement by Interior Secretary Jewell of new funding to help coastal communities rebuild natural barriers damaged in Hurricane Sandy demonstrates the Obama administration’s continued commitment to help those affected by the storm.  As we prepare to mark the one-year anniversary of that terrible event, providing assistance and helping communities restore their infrastructure and local economies must remain a top priority for Congress as well.

“Investing in programs to restore natural barriers along the Atlantic coast and preserve wetlands that protect beaches and harbors remains an important and ongoing effort aimed at preventing future storm damage and helping local economies recover.  I join in thanking Secretary Jewell and other leaders from across the administration and the affected states, including Maryland, for their continued efforts to help our coastal communities move forward in the aftermath of the storm.”
