Hoyer Announces VFD’s SAFER Grant

Riverdale Heights Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded a $331,050 Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response — SAFER — grant. The VFD’s SAFER grant will be used for the recruitment of volunteer firefighters, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer noted during the announcement.

“Volunteer fire departments in Maryland play a critical role in keeping our communities safe,” Congressman Hoyer said. “That’s why I’ve been a strong advocate for the SAFER program so we can ensure that our departments are adequately staffed and our volunteers have the necessary training to respond to emergencies. As co-chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, I will continue to work with my colleagues here in Congress to ensure our departments have the resources needed to recruit, train, and retain volunteers.”

The SAFER grant program provides necessary funding to help ensure 24-hour staffing at the nation’s fire stations so that communities are protected from fire and fire-related hazards. Each year, Congressman Hoyer leads a letter with members of Congress to the Appropriations Committee to ensure adequate federal funding for firefighters across the country. The National Volunteer Fire Council also just got a boost from the federal government. The congressman also recently announced that a $1,069,174 grant was awarded to the NVFC through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The money is slated for a national awareness campaign on health and safety topics, like firefighter cancer, expanding safety training to volunteers, and expanding the fire/EMS helpline.

“I’m pleased to announce that NVFC in Greenbelt received this substantial grant, which will strengthen their ability to support volunteer fire and emergency services,” Congressman Hoyer said.

He said he will continue to work with his colleagues in Congress to ensure that the nation’s firefighters and emergency responders have every tool they need to do their jobs safely and protect the nation’s communities.
