brainDuring National Stroke Awareness Month and throughout the year, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital wants you to be aware of the causes and symptoms of stroke and how to act in the event of one. As a nationally certified Stroke Center, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital offers support and information programs, and on May 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. will hold a Stroke Awareness Fair at the Lexington Park Library to educate the community on stroke prevention and management.

If you’re unable to attend the fair, the hospital’s Health Connections offers a Stroke Survivors Group that meets monthly and provides awareness of community resources, tips on everyday living and peer interaction. The next scheduled meeting is May 8 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the hospital’s Outpatient Pavilion. Learn more about causes of stroke, recovery and how to prevent future problems. Speak with experts in rehabilitation and enjoy light refreshments and the friendship of other stroke survivors and their families. Caregivers are welcome.

Later this month, MedStar St. Mary’s will host a Stroke Focus Group and Dinner to be held on May 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Outpatient Pavilion. You and a guest are invited to join a group of stroke survivors for dinner and discussion. MedStar St. Mary’s would like to learn about your experiences as a stroke survivor and how we can better serve your needs in recovery.

The events are free, but registration is required. Please call Health Connections at 301-475-6019 to register. For a complete list of programs offered through Health Connections, visit MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital’s website at www.medstarstmarys.org.
