Historical Society to Host Map Presentation
The St. Mary’s County Historical Society will hold a hybrid meet and greet and map presentation from 10am to noon Saturday, October 5, at the Leonardtown Library.
This will be the group’s first hybrid meeting–both in person for the first portion, and combined zoom and in person for the second part.
First part will be in the librariy’s Maryland Room where the St. Mary’s County Genealogical Society’s resource collection in housed. Second part is a presentation Searching Historical Maps with Eric Benson, geographic information systems manager for St. Mary’s County, and Tim Benson, webmaster for the St. Mary’s County Historical and Genealogical societies. They will give a talk about historic map resources available for St. Mary’s County and will demonstrate the new interactive history map available on the St. Mary’s County website.
The online, interactive map gives the ability to overlay dozens of historical maps and images of the county over top of current maps and imagery and then seamlessly pan between new and old to see how places have changed over time. It also allows viewing of historic trust sites, historic districts, historic hundreds and election district boundaries, and facilitates searching for indexed historic place names.
