MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital is slated to participate in a forum on health reform specifically targeted for small businesses on June 6, 2013 at SMECO‘s headquarters in Hughesville, Md.

The forum is offered by  Healthiest Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic Business Group on Health caduceus-symbol- with moneyfrom 8 – 11:30 a.m.

A broad group of regional business and health leaders is hosting a morning meeting to explain some of the details in the Affordable Care Act, and how they can impact employee health.  The group, which includes Chambers of Commerce, area hospitals and public health agencies, will also share free resources for businesses to help their employees and families maintain a healthier lifestyle.

“Many small business owners don’t know what to make of the new law,” says John Miller of the MidAtlantic Business Group on Health. “While it can be threatening, there are elements that work to the advantage of small businesses. And regardless of the impact of Health Reform, small businesses would be well advised to take action to help their employees lead healthier lives.  The impact of health on absenteeism and performance on the job is actually more important to small businesses,” says Miller.

Topics will include:

  • Health Reform: what does it really mean to you?
  • Why Worksite Health Promotion? What are some challenges and benefits?
  • Best practices: Hear from local leaders executing successful worksite wellness initiatives
  • Ask questions, share challenges and hear solutions

Hospital representatives will be onsite to discuss the hospital’s workplace wellness initiatives as well as opportunities to customize similar services for small businesses.  For more information about workplace wellness, contact Health Connections at 301-475-6019.
