Health Insurance Enrollment Opens for 2016

WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on open enrollment for plans through the Health Insurance Marketplaces for 2016, which begins on Sunday:

“On Sunday, Americans across the country were able to shop for affordable health coverage in 2016 through the health insurance marketplaces.  Those who were insured this year through the marketplaces will also be able to renew their coverage for 2016 and find out whether another plan better meets their needs or would be less expensive.

The Affordable Care Act, in launching the health insurance marketplaces, has provided consumers with more choices, and I encourage everyone to visit www.healthcare.gov to shop for a plan that works best.

According to a recent report, seven in 10 returning consumers could find coverage for $75 a month or less in premiums by shopping around, and 90 percent of them will be able to choose from three or more issuers.  Once a plan has been selected, Americans have until January 31 to sign up before the open enrollment period ends, although the deadline for being covered at the start of the new year is December 15.

“The Affordable Care Act is working, providing consumers with higher quality and more affordable coverage.  It protects patients against discrimination by insurance companies, bans lifetime or annual limits on coverage, and provides tax credits that help reduce the cost of premiums.

For those without coverage who want to join the 17.6 million previously uninsured Americans who are now covered, or for those who wish to shop around and find a better plan, the way to do so is by visiting the health care website above.  Those without internet access or who choose not to enroll online can call 1-800-318-2596 (TTY 1-855-889-4325) to find in-person assistance to learn about coverage options and sign up for a plan.”
