Rev. Mariann Budde, bishop elect of the Washington Diocese of the Episcopal Church, swung through St. Mary’s County this week on a tour of the Southern Maryland region before she becomes the first female bishop consecrated in the diocese Nov. 12.

On Wednesday, Budde met with representatives from several government and non-profit organizations at a breakfast arranged in her honor at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Valley Lee, Maryland. Representatives from Walden Behavioral Health, St. Mary’s Hospital, Three Oaks Center, WARM, the sheriff’s office, the housing authority and the school board shared their thoughts with Budde on the social challenges facing the county.

Budde accepted a Maryland flag from Sen. Roy Dyson (D), which will be flown from the state capital in her honor.

After breakfast, Budde sat down with local reporters to  talk about her election and her thoughts of Southern Maryland.
