Collaboration can be complicated across technologies applied to military uses and those in the commercial sector. But the rewards can be worth the complications.

That’s what the University of Maryland and a lot of economic advisers are willing to bank up as they knit together plans to leverage that technology into an auxiliary economic engine for Southern Maryland. And despite the very real obstacles of security and practicality, the US Navy agrees as well.

The Patuxent Partnership is actively involved in fostering STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programming in Southern Maryland from kindergarten through locally accessible graduate education opportunities. The University of Maryland System’s decision to develop a research/incubator classroom at the Higher Education Center is taking this type of technology transfer to a new level in Southern Maryland.

Here VADM David Dunaway speaks to both the need for STEM education from the beginning and the ability of the military and industry to collaborate to the improvement of both sector’s needs.
