There was finally good economic news for Maryland this year, says Delegate John Bohanan. As a tenured member of the House Appropriations Committee in the Maryland House of Delegates, that should have allowed him to report nothing but good news back home.

Instead he finds himself representing a Southern Maryland district not reflected in the social laws (such as firearm and marijuana legislation) that turned the 2013 General Assembly controversial.

He and Del. Anthony O’Donnell, minority leader of the other side of the Maryland House, spoke earlier this month to a small forum hosted by the Center for the Study of Democracy, a joint project of St. Mary’s College of Maryland and Historic St. Mary’s City.

Del. O’Donnell notes the partisanship at the state level. Yet both he and Del. Bohanan cast similar votes on the firearm and social laws passed in Annapolis this year.
