Eating Words: A Book Talk at Annmarie Garden

Posted for Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Art Center

A Gallery Book Talk given by English Professor Jennifer Cognard-Black, entitled Eating Words: Recipes as Literature and Books that Cook, will take place Sunday, Nov. 16, 2014, 1- 3 pm, at Annmarie Garden.

Admission to the talk is free; reservations are not required.

Whether a five-star chef or dedicated home cook, any gourmand knows that recipes are far more than a set of instructions on how to make a dish.  Recipes are culture-keepers as well as culture-makers, both recording memories and fostering new ones.  In “Eating Words,” food literature specialist and St. Mary’s College of Maryland Professor Jennifer Cognard-Black will talk about the recipe as a form of literature.  She’ll also share delectable morsels of recipe poetry and foodie prose from her brand-new collection, Books that Cook: The Making of a Literary Meal.  Copies of the book will be available for purchase and autograph.

The talk is a part of the Feast Your Eyes: the art of food, exhibit on display in the Main Gallery at Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center in Solomons, MD, running through Jan. 4, 2015.

Since prehistoric artists created hunting scenes on cave walls, cuisine and culture have come together in art. Most all people have an undeniable sensory connection to food—we love its taste, form, color, texture, aroma and sound (think sizzling bacon or pouring coffee).  Food can be more than sustenance; food can be a passion, an entertaining and delicious escape, a comfort, or for some, even an obsession.

Food is vital to all of our lives and is certainly at the heart of every celebration. Food is the subject of endless books, news reports, scientific studies, social media posts, and conversations. People are deeply interested in food’s sustainability, production, processing, distribution, scarcity, quantity, quality, composition, and price. This delectable show features the work of thirty-eight artists from across the country, who explore these and other food-related issues, from the profound to the ridiculous. This rich and varied exhibit both honors and explores the complexity of our relationship with food.

Feast Your Eyes Exhibit-Related Activities – for those guests that like to play with their food, the Feast Your Eyes exhibit will include three on-going activities.  Visit the Recipe Swap wall where visitors can leave a family favorite recipe and then, in exchange, copy down a recipe someone else has left!  Younger guests will enjoy Create-A-Plate, where they can create a plate of their favorite food using felt food creations.  And finally, the exhibit will include a Scavenger Hunt, where visitors get a tally sheet with topics and images to find within the various pieces of art on display.  Admission to Feast Your Eyes: the art of food, and the complementary activities, is included with the price of admission to Annmarie Garden.  Visit www.annmariegarden.org for hours and additional information.
