Sawmillling was once a big part of the Great Mills community. Dyson’s Lumber was at the heart of that industry, and had perhaps the most advanced machinery in the town.

As milling evolved Dyson’s evolved with it, bringing the first electric sawmill to the county, and revolutionizing the way that sawmills operated. Prior to having an electric engine, the saw was operated by a diesel engine and was mobile. This meant that if the engine ran out of fuel it either had to be refueled or work was done for the day. Once the electric engine was installed at Dyson’s Lumber, which is now Dyson Building Center, if the county had electric the sawmill was up and running.

The Dyson family has kept up with the times, and while the sawmill business has left Great Mills, the Dyson business has continued to grow. What started out as a small retail business is now a full service lumber yard, and fully stocked home improvement shop. They now bring in lumber from nearby mills in Baltimore and stock their lumber yard with all and anything you need for your next project.

Dyson Building center is full of experienced employees who have stuck with the business for more than 20 years, and who are ready to see what the next trend of building and home improvement may bring their way.
