Deputies Expand Off-Road Fleet

First there were dirt bikes and now St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office deputies will add two Segways to their off-road transportation fleet.

The dirt bikes open an off-road avenue for the COPS deputies of Lexington Park, Md., to patrol and pursue. The Segways will also patrol areas of the county unreachable by car, such as the Three Notch Trail in Mechanicsville, Md., as well as during community events and special operations.

The Segways were purchased using Homeland Security grant funding. St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office deputies attended training provided by Segway of Annapolis.
