CSM Honors Scholarship Recipients

College Foundation Awards More Than 350 Scholarships

The College of Southern Maryland honored the donors and the recipients of the 2016-17 CSM Foundation scholarships at a reception Oct. 21 on the La Plata Campus. For the 2016 fall semester, the foundation awarded nearly $420,000 to more than 275 students.

Additional scholarships will be awarded in January 2017 for the spring semester.

“I am honored to meet and recognize our scholarship donors who are making an impact in our Southern Maryland community. They have chosen to partner with the CSM Foundation and invest in keeping higher education affordable and accessible; which in turn enhances the health and welfare of our local economy,” CSM President Dr. Brad Gottfried said. “They are investing in our students, they are investing in you, and we want to thank them and will recognize them.”

Gottfried noted that each year the number of scholarships established by donors and the amount of scholarship money that is awarded continues to grow. Since 2006, the college has increased the number of scholarship funds from 62 to 156.

During Gottfried’s 10-year tenure at CSM, the foundation has awarded more than $3 million to more than 3,000 students.

“This past year the CSM Foundation awarded more than $855,000 in scholarships and funding for new programs, technology and equipment that will take us beyond good to great,” said Rané Franklin, chair of the CSM Foundation.

She vowed that the foundation would continue to carry forward Gottfried’s vision of “no student being denied an education or career training due to financial limitations.”

Gottfried announced earlier this semester that he will retire from his position at CSM on June 30, 2017.

“The CSM Foundation has pledged to carry his legacy forward in a big way with our $10 million ‘Make An Impact Campaign,’” she said. “We are raising $10 million, and we are more than halfway there, having raised $6.6 million to date for scholarships, programs, equipment, partnerships and the Entrepreneur and Innovation Institute.”

Franklin thanked all of the donors for their support of the college. “You are providing a lasting impact on the lives of these students,” she said.

Marianne Harms, left, Calvert County businesswoman, donor and keynote speaker, posed with student speaker Tina Shepherd at the College of Southern Maryland Foundation scholarship awards reception. Shepherd was awarded the Calvert County Chamber of Commerce Annual Scholarship and the Hank Willoughby Foundation Inc. Scholarship for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Keynote speaker Marianne Harms, a Calvert County businesswoman and philanthropist, recently donated a $1 million gift to the CSM Foundation in support of scholarships through the John and Marianne Harms Endowed Scholarship Fund. “I can’t think of a better place to invest than in the people who want to continue education at CSM,” Harms said.

“I believe the College of Southern Maryland is one of our greatest assets in Southern Maryland and is most essential to the health and economic prosperity of our community. Whether you are seeking a degree or career training, or simply looking for personal enrichment in your life, this college enriches all of us in many ways,” Harms said. “We appreciate the value of higher education and career training, and I see many bright futures here tonight, and I want to be part of your future.”

CSM student Tina Shepherd spoke on behalf of the scholarship recipients. Shepherd was 35 when she started taking classes at CSM and she is the first person in her family to attend college. She was awarded the Calvert County Chamber of Commerce Annual Scholarship and the Hank Willoughby Foundation Inc. Scholarship for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Shepherd, who is studying to be a physical therapist assistant and is in her third semester at CSM, said she was afraid to take the first step in obtaining an associate’s degree but now her goal is to earn a bachelor’s degree and ultimately a doctorate to be a physical therapist.

“Even working full time and taking classes part time, it is still a huge stretch for me financially to do this. … I am eternally grateful for the people who have so generously provided scholarships for students like myself. I know I simply would not be able to continue my college education if I didn’t have these scholarships. My biggest fear was how I was going to pay for this education without drowning in debt.”
