CSM Emergency Preparedness Drill Nov. 7

dean's list

CSM La Plata Campus will be Site of Emergency Exercise Nov. 7

The College of Southern Maryland will help build its emergency preparedness at an exercise planned for 8 am to noon Nov. 7, 2015, on the La Plata Campus.

The college will work with community partners like the Maryland Emergency Management Agency and local and regional emergency management and public safety agencies.

During the exercise, traffic into the campus will be diverted to the south entrance. Classes and programs for the morning will continue as scheduled and will not be affected by the exercise, which will be limited to the Business Building and the Center for Business and Industry.

An alert will be sent through the emergency communication text system, CSM.txt, to announce when the exercise begins and ends. The area of the drill will be accessible only to those officially involved in the drill, including local police, fire and EMS personnel as well as volunteers who will be serving in various roles.

Emergency personnel use drills to periodically test and practice their plans for emergencies. The drills are planned meticulously because in an actual emergency, there are no plans or scripts. These exercises provide a chance for emergency workers to practice the tasks they may have to perform in an actual emergency.

Local public service officials and agencies work together to practice a variety of scenarios, from active shooters to storms and inclement weather emergencies.

The Maryland Emergency Management Agency has a host of information available to help citizens and businesses in the event of a variety of emergencies. There are lists to make disaster supply kits, steps to safety, and even information on what emergency personnel do in cases of disaster.
