Initial site work launched this month a game-changing overhaul of the character of Great Mills Road. The total commercial and residential project will extend north and south along the west side of Great Mills Road from its intersection with Chancellor’s Run Road.

The plans developed by Cherry Cove Builders are not fully public, but according to Robin Finnacom, CEO of the Community Development Corporation, will be large enough to “accelerate redevelopment of all of Great Mills Road.”

Cherry Cove last year acquired and demolished a deteriorating gas station at that intersection and Mike’s Bar to the north. This month reconfigurations began at the former gas station site. Included in the commercial development slated for the corner will be a shared entrance with the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge on Chancellor’s Run Road.

Commercial services slated for the corner include health care, Ms. Finnacom reported at the September meeting of the Lexington Park Business and Community Development Association.

The lot where Mike’s Bar once stood will ultimately become part of a game-changing renewal along Great Mills Road.

This corner is only the launch of “big plans,” Ms. Finnacom said, for residential and commercial redevelopment involving the large manufactured homes community and the commercial Great Mills Road frontage owned by Cherry Cove. The project is completely privately financed, she said and praised the decades Cherry Cove builders have worked to improve the Lexington Park community.

Details of the huge redevelopment plans are not yet public but include residential set asides for low-income housing and provisions for residents to transition into home ownership are included, according to Ms. Finnacom.

The association is looking to invite Cherry Cove developers to a future meeting to describe the full redevelopment plan which Ms. Finnacom said would “accelerate redevelopment of all of Great Mills Road.”
