Check for Legality and Be Safe This Fourth of July

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind citizens to celebrate safely this 4th of July.

Fireworks were involved in an estimated 9,600 injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments during calendar year 2011.  Many of these injuries can be avoided by following the below tips endorsed by the Maryland State Fire Marshall’s Office.

•  Keep children and pets away from fireworks and ignition sources
•  Only use fireworks outdoors
•  Light one firework at a time and move quickly away from firework
•  Never throw fireworks or light them in your hand
•  Read and Follow Label Directions
•  Have a water source available where fireworks are being used
•  Soak used fireworks in a bucket of water
•  NEVER attempt to re-light a firework that did not go off.  Wait 15-20 minutes then soak in bucket
Only purchase fireworks from approved retail sites in Maryland.
