Bohanan & Russell Turn an Idea Into a Law

Posted for Del. John Bohanan &
Commissioner President Jack Russell

Delegate John Bohanan was invited to the NAACP meeting in Lexington Park to talk about how to turn a local idea into a law. One of the examples he used was the result when Commissioner President Jack Russell phoned him on his cell phone while the delegation was in session.

The county needed money to build a sheriff’s department in the former Lexington Park Volunteer Rescue Squad building on Great Mills Road in Lexington Park, MD and Commissioner Russell wanted some state money.

“Now that’s the shortcut route, Jack happened to have my cell number, he happened to call at just the right time, we were still in the budget and we were able to help him like that. Not everybody has a pipeline like that,” the Del. told the NAACP audience. And also Jack Russell, who was at the time recording the video you see below.

Commissioner Russell, running for his third term as President of St. Mary’s County Commissioners says the most valuable thing experience in office brings is “knowing who to call” when St. Mary’s County needs support from another government agency.

Delegate John Bohanan’s tenure in the House of Delegates has won him an important seat on the House Appropriations Committee which reviews bond bills such as the $125,000 bond Delegate Bohanan secured to help with the former rescue squad building as well as state support for construction of the U.S. Colored Troops Memorial in Lexington Park. This latter initiative was brought to Del. Bohanan from a citizen, Idolia Shubrooks, the granddaughter of one of the USCT medal of honor recipients memorialized.
