Middle School Girls Will Be STEM-ING Saturday

Middle School

Middle school is a time when girls, who had been science and math fans during elementary school, all too often drop their interest in STEM subjects. On Saturday, May 7, The Patuxent Partnership and a plethora of other sponsors will bring middle school girls to St. Mary’s College of Maryland for “STEM-ing” to help them celebrate the awesome and fulfilling experience of working in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

STEM-ING welcomes middle school girls in grades 6 to 8. The idea is for the girls to get inspired by the amazing world of STEM activities and careers. The mission of the event is to bring awareness of STEM and STEM-related careers to student participants, who will enjoy interactive and hands-on activities together.

Dozens of volunteers will make this event happen, either by helping with activities or being mentors and leading activities. The women who volunteer are working in the STEM fields in some way, some as engineers and some as scientists and more.

The 2014 event drew 128 middle school girls to 14 different workshops. The girls will choose three different workshops they want to attend, and they will all get together for lunch, which is included in the $10 fee. Registration for the event as a student has ended, but the registration page gives details on the workshops and girls who want to participate next year can start planning now.

Girls will meet STEM role models, enjoy STEM activities and learn by doing the very type of work these amazing women do in the tri-county area. The event is set from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.

The Patuxent Partnership fosters collaboration and the sharing of knowledge and expertise across a diverse network including: educational institutions; industry; local, state and federal governments; and TPP employees and members. TPP also promotes STEM education and workforce development within the local community by hosting programs of interest to NAVAIR, NAWCAD and the broader DoD community.
