Jimmy Yurko won the small boat racing, and Joe Frost won the Cruising Race in events supporting the Sail for Youth annual fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 25 off Solomons Island.

Norm Briggs in his 45-foot trawler “Serendipity” completed the informal cruising course and received a special award for the boat completing one of the days events and raising the most money.

Both Yurko and Frost tested themselves in the high winds and rains of Saturday’s storms.  Yurko said it was one of the most exciting sailing days he could remember.  Frost said that he shortened sail significantly to good effect in the winds of about 20 knots and four-foot waves off the mouth of the Patuxent River.

Captain Christopher Junge of NAVAIR, the honorary chairman of the event, assisted in awarding prizes to all contestants and supporting committees for the event at a post-race celebration at Zahniser’s Yachting Center, a major sponsor of the event. The other major sponsors, included Bayside Toyota, Perigeaux Vineyards, County First Bank, Community Bank of Tri-County, and CTSi.

The event raised over $8,000 to support three major local charities: Calvert Hospice, the Foundation of the Rotary Club of Prince Frederick, and the Southern Maryland Sailing Foundation. The proceeds will go toward the youth activities of these beneficiaries, all of whom helped to put on the event.
