You Can Help Girls Overcome Prejudice

girl risingImagine your daughter, niece, sister or grandchild being forced to work from early morning to late in the night just to be allowed to eat whatever scraps are leftover from another family’s dinner. Imagine her living in fear of being beaten or killed by her husband, her brother or a male stranger, simply for speaking her mind.

Throughout the world, over 66 million girls are never given the opportunity to go to school, have a childhood, or any hope for improving their futures. Many more must fight every day to remain in school. Very young girls in developing countries are expected to work and care for younger children. Girls whose parents cannot afford to feed them are often “bonded” in order to survive. Children as young as age three work long days, and suffer heartbreaking abuses.

Local Girl Scout troop #2225 campaigned to bring “Girl Rising,” an Academy Award-winning film about the hurdles that nine inspirational girls conquered to receive an education. The film, narrated by noted actresses such as Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Salma Hayek and more, was created by 10×10, a global campaign to educate and empower girls.

“Girl Rising” tells the stories of nine girls from around the world who did the impossible, who escaped their fates and fought for what many of us take for granted: the right to an education. Each girl’s story was written by an author from her own country. Their heart-wrenching and inspirational stories are showcased by stunning cinematography and powerful narration.
